The New York Times finds two ways to cover “The Rite of Spring Project,” the Berlin Philharmonic’s joint outreach venture with Carnegie Hall.
First, Jennifer Dunning gives a surprisingly surly report in the dance section. Her main objection is to the charminess of the whole affair, which involved a couple hundred New York City students dancing their trans-pubescent hearts out to one of the most pyschologically fucked up pieces of music ever written. Awesome.
The event took place at the United Palace Theater in Washington Heights, an old Loew’s theater that today is mainly used as a rock and pop venue. T-Bone Tommasini managed to find a broader, more culture conscious way to appreciate the poly-ethnic blend of the uber-uptown audience. He’s been covering Carnegie Hall’s “Berlin In Lights” broohaha on ArtsBeat. I love to hear the critics get low down on this shit. Although, with T-Bone, it kind of feels like running into your junior high biology teacher at the mall, all dressed-down in t-shirt and jeans, but still sporting those dorky glasses.
