Moving Fast Forward

ff.jpgAnother youth-snatch opera gimmick is being played out; this time in Italy. The Piccola Lirica of Rome is offering a 90-minute version of Tosca with five singers and four dudes on electric equipment. Reporting for The Times, Michael Kimmelman says it wasn’t all that bad. He gets to the heart of it here:

“Stripped of spectacle, Piccola Lirica’s “Tosca” proved that immediacy and a little genuine pathos can suffice for a casual evening at the theater.”

Now if we can just get some new pieces like this, you know, without the electronica reduction, we might just be in business.
