Today is Opera Day!
Coming up, we’re gonna harsh Perter Gelb’s mellow for the operatic atrocity that is…Lucia di Lammermoor.
But for now, we’re gonna give you Anne Midgette’s take on The City Opera’s Carmen. She’s right on in her careful description of Beth Clayton’s voice. But we totes dis with her over the performance of the orchestra. We thought they were kinda peppy. Then she writes this:
The overture sounded like a collection of bright, familiar show tunes.
Umm, honey, that’s not the orchestra’s fault. Blame Bizet, cuz he wrote that shit, and it actually is a collection of bright, familiar show tunes. But what a collection!
